May We Honor
Sermon Title: You’re In My Seat

Introduction

  • BRAND. NEW. SERIES: May We Honor.
  • Today’s sermon: You’re In My Seat
  • Fast food, Amazon, Instacart are all byproducts of our desire as a culture to put convenience over everything else. Instant gratification is more accessible than every before.
  • Our instant-have-it-now culture can make us so self-absorbed that we place our wants over the needs of others.

1. Humiliation Seeks the Best Seat

  • Jesus gives an illustration about honor and humility in Luke 14:7-11 to the Pharisees.
  • People often seek pride-filled honor, causing them to take the best seat for them and possibly face humiliation.
  • Humility is what helps us avoid humiliation.
  • There is danger in seeking worldly promotion over God’s blessing.

“When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable…For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” – Luke 14:7-11 (NIV)

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” – James 4:10 (NIV)

2. Humility Waits to Be Seated

  • We must. be developed which requires patience and waiting on God in the face of instant gratification.
  • We all face the temptation of rushing into things for instant gratification compared to waiting and trusting God.
  • There is a clear connection in humility, patience, and trust in God. It must be chosen over being led by pride.

(3) Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, (4) not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.Philippians 2:1-4 – NIV

3. Honor Give Up Their Seat

  • Humility should be visible in our interactions with others and it mirrors the life of Jesus.
  • We must be willing to put others above ourselves when it comes to being a Godly example in the world.
  • Explore Philippians 2:3-8 as an example of Jesus’s humility, serving others and offering them the “best seat.”
  • Encourage the congregation to display this same humility in their daily lives.

(12) Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. (13) But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, (14) and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”Luke 14:12-14 – NIV

Bring it Home

  • There is danger in seeking self-promotion and instant gratification.
  • We must be more like Jesus, practicing humility and service to others.
